The Scarborough Civic Action Network (part of Agincourt Community Services Association), which has been operating actively for over a decade, was looking to develop a logo and defined visual identity for the first time.

The organization is a network of agencies, community groups, and individuals working to improve the quality of life of Scarborough’s diverse and growing population through civic action. They raise awareness and speak out on issues that matter to Scarborough residents as citizens of Toronto, Ontario and Canada.

Despite the effectiveness of the Scarborough Civic Action Network (SCAN) in extending its reach throughout Scarborough and facilitating civic engagement over the past ten years, the organization did not have a logo to identify their work.

SCAN was looking for a logo that represented connecting people and ideas across Scarborough, and the positive growth and change that develops from these connections. They also wanted the logo to reflect that the civic engagement work undertaken in Scarborough has ripple effects throughout our communities, Scarborough and the City of Toronto.

Jessica Roher, Coordinator at SCAN during the process, explained that “the logo developed by Daniel Francavilla reflects the positive impact we can have when we make a concerted effort to contribute to improving our communities”. Roher explained,

“While we wanted SCAN’s logo to be professional and clean, we also wanted to ensure that it reflects that we work with communities at the grassroots level to make civic engagement fun and accessible. Capitalizing the word ‘Scarborough’ while writing ‘civic action network’ in lower case, allowed us to balance the formal and informal engagement that we do.”

In addition, the organization required flexibility because the Scarborough Civic Action Network is known by most in the community as SCAN but has previously been referred to as ‘ScarboroughCAN’.

A logo was developed along with three alternative variations to be used in certain situations. The main logo, displayed above as the finalized design, will be applied to SCAN’s documents and marketing materials, beginning with the website (currently being developed). Along with the logo, a typographic style and colour scheme were provided to the organization for implementation.

“We wanted to make sure that our logo could be adjusted so that variations could be used for different events. Daniel developed a logo that allows for this flexibility but is consistent,” Roher explained, ”We are really excited about our new logo because we know it will help us extend our reach further and be more visible in the community”.

Colin Hughes, the Chair of SCAN’s Steering Committee, stated:

“We are very pleased and excited about the new logo designed by Daniel Francavilla for the Scarborough Civic Action Network and extend to him our gratitude and congratulations! The new logo gives SCAN an unique and fitting visual presence and is especially needed to make fuller use of social media to outreach and connect with the community on civic issues and civic involvement.”

It was a very positive experience working with the SCAN team and developing a logo for an organization that is making real change within Toronto.

As described in another article about the progress, this new logo for the Scarborough Civic Action Network was delivered as part of “Designing for Good“.

The Schulich Undergraduate Business Council is the student government of students at Schulich School of Business at York University. The council, which represents the interests of the student body, encourages involvement in the school, and promotes the business program to the external business community, was looking to create a completely new website and visual identity.

Although representing students of a prestigious business school, Schulich UBC wanted to add a creative edge. While maintaining the classic blue and white colour scheme, the logo design includes a splash. This organic shape in the artistic medium of paint helps Schulich UBC to stand out from other standard business organizations.

When required, alternate text-based version of the logos were also developed for formal situations.

The new website contains core content from the existing site as well as several new features. The many pages organize the council’s many clubs and events as well as online resources, and the detailed “about” section profiles each member and more.

The site was created using a content management system for easy access and efficient update ability for the council, who will post newsletter content twice per week on the blog. Further content and graphics will be added to the site after its launch on the first day of classes, September 7.

This project involved creating the Layout and Design Standards for a 250-page full-colour book, published on the history of the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board to mark its 40th Anniversary.

The book, which was commissioned by the Director of Education, is called Our Story. Our Tradition. Our Journey: Celebrating the Church-School Connection in Dufferin-Peel. The Design and Layout team consisted of Daniel Francavilla, Jennifer Paul and Peter Fujiwara. Edited by Krysia P. Lear, the project was lead by Shelagh Peterson, the board’s Coordinator of Religious Education & Faith Formation.

Consisting of hundreds of images both new and old, the book tells the story of how the school board came to be, including its many unique challenges and memorable triumphs, and featuring the stories individuals who fought for a better future in education.

The cover photo by Peter Fujiwara (featured in the layout above) is a representation of the board as a whole:

The glass is taken from our newest high school St. Michael’s in Bolton, while the image in the glass is of our oldest associated parish St. Patrick’s Church in Wildfield. The concept is that we strive to be current in all our education practices while our Catholic traditions and values are reflected in all we do. The more subtle representation of the cross illustrated in the lighting of the glass speaks to the mystery of the Holy Trinity and the pervasiveness of God’s presence which may be beyond our awareness.

The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board is one of the largest, fastest-growing and most diverse school boards in Ontario. It serves approximately 87,000 students in 145 schools and it is one of the largest employers in the region, with over 10,000 employees. This book included all properties of the board, which extends throughout Mississauga, Brampton, Bolton, Caledon, Orangeville and Dufferin County.

The book, which has received excellent reviews and is going into an additional print run, will be distributed among schools and churches within the board’s boundaries and available in various archives and libraries.

More information is available in the book launch press release here.

A New D.A.E.I. is a brand new community dance hub in Brampton, dedicated to bridging the gap between dancers and the entertainment industry. The name is literally an acronym for “A New Dance Academy for the Entertainment Industry”. The academy was founded by celebrity dancer and choreographer Tré Armstrong, judge of CTV’s So You Think You Can Dance Canada and is operated by some highly motivated and enthusiastic individuals.

Starting off fresh, the A New D.A.E.I. team was looking for an online presence to showcase their offerings, which include Private Dance Instruction, Community-Based Dance Workshop, Seminars and Classes. With an existing logo and brand, the opportunity was in channelling users to a central website where all of the important details and online registration could be clearly displayed.

Immediately after the site launched, promotions took place for a major event: The Give Back, an annual free day of dance taking place on July 10 at Canada’s National Ballet School. Press coverage has been featured on the website here.

The website, which will be undergoing updates and additions, is live at www.anewdaei.com. All the best the launch of this exciting new community dance hub!

For the launch of a blooming video and photography business, a visual identity was created to represent NattvMedia consistently in the busy media environment.

Featuring a distinct, powerful red, the logotype became clean and sleek. With NattvMedia’s business, the focus is on the photography and video work; therefore the logo is not distracting when applied in cases such as as a photo watermark.

As a new business, this project included the development of the logo and applications on staff business cards, flyers, invitations, coupons, storefront signage as well as the website, nattvmedia.com.
